About the event
*Prerequisite: Either White Affinity: Unlearning Individual Competitiveness and Action Bias in Leadership or White Affinity: Letting go of Urgency and Individualism in Leadership
About our Course:
"We have experienced what it's like to release any assumption that one person has all the skills needed to lead and support the work." — adrienne maree brown, Emergent Strategy
“Leadership is not a role or a set of traits, but a zone of inter-relational process: Step in; Step out.” — Nora Bateson, Leadership Within the Paradox of Agency
Let's face it: Unlike flocks of geese that famously trade the lead position, our society has normalized Hierarchy. And the new paradigm of leadership described in the quotes above is a radical departure from what we've grown up with. Rankings of our status by title, education, age, gender, race, ability and many other social constructions are so common that we hardly think to question them. At the root of all of this is the ranking of our heads/minds/thoughts over our bodies/feelings/intuitions.
In this intermediate workshop, for white presenting participants only, we will begin to integrate our thoughts, feelings, and intuitions as we dismantle the transactional roles of leadership. We will investigate body practices that encourage collaborative action, yet don’t get mired in endless process. Join us as we learn to recognize the right thing to do in the moment, as well as how to support each other as we step into and out of leadership.
About our Facilitator:
Rie Algeo Gilsdorf (she/her/ella) is passionate about seeing and integrating the big picture to restore health, wholeness and equity to systems large and small. With a Master’s degrees in Biology and Modern Dance, Rie organically infuses the perspectives of the body - from the physiology of trauma to the subtlety of gesture - into all her work. Whether she is breaking down the difficult truths of our common history so they are not overwhelming, providing a Cultural Ways of Being audit to build more inclusive culture, or leading Embodied Equity practice groups, Rie expertly facilitates development of critical consciousness across race, gender, sexuality and ability. She has been a teacher, administrator and designer of arts-integrated, student-centered K-12 schools and Reggio-inspired early childhood programs. Rie is active in the development of systems thinking and sensing tools through the U.School for Transformation, and is a national leader in the use of Social Presencing Theater in antiracism work.
